    Choirmaster Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra Choir and Vocal ensemble

    Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra (GSO) is the National Orchestra of Sweden, playing around 100 concerts a year at the Gothenburg Concert Hall at Götaplatsen. 

    In addition to concerts in Gothenburg as well as international touring, the symphony orchestra’s digital concert hall GSOplay broadcasts concerts live and on demand in full HD.

    GSO’s ambition to be one of the leading orchestras includes efforts to maintain a choir of high standards. In line with this we have from 2015 also 12 part-time employed chorists.

    Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra Choir (GSK)

    The choir with its 90 singers performs with GSO four to six times a year in Gothenburg Concert Hall together with leading conductors.

    The repertoire is wide and includes the big symphonic pieces as well as film music and musicals.

    Normally rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings and during performance weeks, there are three additional rehearsal and two concerts.

    Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra Vocal Ensemble (GSVE)

    The employed singers’ main role is to be the core of GSK, but they also perform on their own.

    Main responsibilities

    To lead and develop GSK and GSVE.

    Collaborate with Planning Director/committee and conductors to plan repertoire and productions for both choirs.

    Planning and collaboration with the conductor before and during the production.

    Lead all rehearsals and any other preparations for concert/recording productions.

    Lead and conduct the choir at separate choir productions.

    Responsible for recruiting/auditions as a member of a panel.

    Resolving practical issues in near collaboration with Planning and Orchestra Departments.


    University degree, or equivalent, in choir conducting.

    Experience of conducting symphonic choral repertoire.

    Relevant experience from various professional choral and symphonic institutions.

    Experience of inhouse strategic artistic development.

    Understand and speak Swedish.


    Dedicated with the ability to motivate and develop the choirs.

    Structured with a good ability to plan and optimize the choir’s resources.

    Energetic and active when recruiting new singers.

    Finding ways to reach higher artistic level for the choirs.

    Excellence in working together and communicating with everyone, as individuals as well as groups.

    Clearly defined leadership qualities and an ability to give helpful feedback to both choir and individual singer.

    You will be reporting directly to General Manager/Artistic Director. Day to day, you will work closely with the Orchestra and Planning Departments.

    The position is limited to three to five years with a possible extension.
