Basel Sinfonietta

About us

Music at the pulse of time

The Basel Sinfonietta is an orchestra specializing in contemporary music with a symphonic line-up – and a unique ensemble in the world due to its musical profile, size and democratic self-government. The Principal Conductor of the Basel Sinfonietta is Baldur Brönnimann. Assistant Conductor of the 2018/19 season is Andrew Joon Choi.

Since its foundation in 1980, the Basel Sinfonietta has been beyond the scope of classical concert conventions and has attracted international attention with its daring programmes full of contemporary music, multimedia and performance, supported by the ambition to bring music to the fore with its finger on the pulse through composition commissions, world premieres and Swiss premieres. By promoting young talent as well as school and youth projects, the orchestra also promotes the dissemination of new forms of music.

Highlights of the 2019/20 season include performances at the Warsaw Autumn and the Eight Bridges Festival in Cologne, collaborations with composers such as Georg Friedrich Haas, Katharina Rosenberger and Cécile Marti, as well as conductors Peter Rundel and Johannes Kalitzke.

The Basel Sinfonietta is financially supported by the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft.
