The International Hugo Wolf Academy Stuttgart (IHWA) is one of the oldest and most traditional institutions for promotion and preservation of a unique musical genre - the art song. The focus is on German-language song from Franz Schubert to the present as well as on the rich non-German-language song treasures of France, Great Britain, Scandinavia and many more.
Song recital series, numerous collaborations (including with the Stuttgart State Opera) and the regular awarding of the Hugo Wolf Medal to outstanding artists for their special services to the art of song are diverse platforms of the IHWA. New formats and forms of presentation, including the online LiedBÜHNE, find their place here just as much as the traditional art song recital.
In addition, the promotion of young musicians is particularly close to the Academy's heart. The regularly held Stuttgart Master Class for Art Song, led by internationally renowned teachers, reflects this commitment just as much as the International Competition for Art Song Stuttgart, which the IHWA has been organising in Stuttgart since 1987 and which has developed into one of the largest and most important competitions for art song duos worldwide.
