The International Aeolus Competition for Wind Instruments has firmly established itself as a worldwide recognized stage for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone and Tuba. It takes place once a year in Düsseldorf since 2006.
Each year three of the Instrument groups are opened for competition: 2023 the competition calls for Trombone, Trumpet and Tuba. The total prize money is € 60,000, the first prize wins € 20,000.
The 2023 Competition is open to young soloists of all nationalities born on or after January 1st, 1995.

Arrival and registration are to take place on Monday the 4th of September 2023 between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the office of the Robert Schumann Hochschule, Fischerstrasse 110, 40476 Düsseldorf, Germany
The opening of the competition takes place at 6 p.m. at the Robert Schumann Hochschule. It is expected that all participants will be present.
Late registration will lead to disqualification of the candidate from the competition. A registered competitor delayed through no fault of their own may be granted permission to complete by the chairman of the jury, if they arrives before the first round.
First Round, to last no longer than 15 minutes
a) Raymond Gallois-Montbrun: Sarabande et Finale
or
Marcel Bitsch: Auatre Variations sur un Theme de Scarlatti
b) Leopold Mozart: Konzert D-Dur TWV 51:D7
or
Giuseppe Torelli: Konzert D-Dur G1
Second Round to last not longer than 30 minutes (It must be ensured that the total length of the selected works does not exceed 30 minutes)
a) Joseph Haydn: Konzert in Es-Dur HOB Vlle: 1
or
Johann Nepomuk Hummel: Konzert E-Dur
b) A contemporary solo piece of own choice composed after 01.01.1970, an own composition is possible
Third Round, to last not longer than 30 minutes
a) Karl Pilss: Sonate, 1st and 2nd Movements
b) A piece of free choice from the following group:
Finals and prize winner's concert with Düsseldorfer Symphoniker
Alfred Desenclos: Incantation, Thrène et Danse for Trumpet and Orchestra
Please notice:
The concerto of Leopold Mozart, Giuseppe Torelli, Joseph Haydn, Johann Nepomuk Hummel and the piece of Alfred Desenclos must be performed by heart. For the required pieces the jury reserves the right to hear them whole or excerpts thereof.
Candidates are required to write a short bio when confirming participation for use in programs or booklets, 500 characters maximum.
