The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the most versatile orchestras in the Netherlands. It plays the great symphonies of composers such as Mahler and Brahms as well as operas by R. Strauss and Wagner. The orchestra excels in the style of the late romantic and early twentieth century and is renowned for its high level. The Royal Concertgebouw is the home venue for varied concert programming. For over 30 years, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the affiliated Netherlands Chamber Orchestra have been the primary orchestra partner of Dutch National Opera and are considered one of the best opera orchestras in Europe. From 2021-2022 season, the orchestra will open a new chapter with Lorenzo Viotti as the new chief conductor.
The concertmaster of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra is a top violinist with an exemplary role and inspiring leadership qualities, on and off the stage. With artistic excellence and personal authority, the concertmaster makes a stimulating contribution to the evaluation and development of the orchestra's performances. The concertmaster is a pleasant and enterprising partner for orchestra members, chief conductor, guest musicians and management.
The auditions will take place on June 28 and 29, 2021. The first day consists of two rounds in which candidates are asked to perform (movements from) two violin concertos, orchestral solos, orchestral fragments and solo work by J.S. Bach. The second (final) day candidates will be asked to play and rehearse with the orchestra and principal conductor Lorenzo Viotti two orchestral solo’s as concertmaster. On this day, the finalists will also be asked to lead a short rehearsal (without conductor). Hereby the concertmaster leads the string orchestra in a run through and rehearsal of a work for strings by Tchaikovsky.
The selection consists of two parts. In the audition it will be considered which candidate can be nominated for appointment on artistic grounds. After that, an interview takes place to determine whether the candidate also meets the demands of the position as to personality, skills and vision on the position of the concertmaster in the NedPhO|NKO. Based on this, a decision on recommendation to the management will be made.
The selection committee reserves the right to make a pre-selection based on the information in Muvac.
The exact size of contract and the date of commencement of employment for the mentioned position will be decided by mutual agreement. The salary is market-based; the other terms of employment are in accordance with the national regulations of Dutch Orchestras, which you can find on www.vvno.nl , the website of the association of Dutch Orchestras.
