The University of North Carolina School of the Arts is located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a progressive Southern city with a vibrant downtown renaissance and the recipient of many “Best Place to Live” honors. As home to the first Arts Council in the US, Winston Salem paved the way for public-private support of the arts and created the model for Arts Councils nationwide. The city’s numerous galleries, performing arts groups, theaters, collectives and collections continue to attract and appeal to arts lovers worldwide.
Students are admitted by competitive auditions and come from throughout North Carolina, the United States and more than 20 foreign countries. UNCSA is one of seventeen campuses of the University of North Carolina system, and the first state-supported, residential school of its kind in the nation.
The institution opened its doors in 1965 and has since developed an international reputation for training high-caliber artists. Reflecting the philosophy that serious artistic training should not be restricted to the college years, UNCSA enrolls a student body running from high school through post-master’s degree.
The School of Music at UNCSA offers a transformative experience that combines intensive individual study under artist mentors with a fantastic variety of performance opportunities — more than 200 recitals, concerts and operas each year, including collaborations with other UNCSA performing arts schools. In addition to our competitive undergraduate and graduate programs, we’re proud to offer one of the nation’s only 4-year residential high school programs in music. The School of Music is also home to the renowned A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute, a professional training ground for exceptional young vocalists, and the Chrysalis Chamber Music Institute, which provides dynamic training for young artists through extensive performing experience and partnerships with leading professional ensembles. The UNCSA School Music offers unparalleled interdisciplinary arts collaboration on a comprehensive campus that also includes schools in Filmmaking, Drama, Design & Production, and Dance.
