    The Gipuzkoan Provincial Council together with the Basque-Navarrese Association of Composers “Musikagileak” is organising the 16th "Pablo Sorozabal" International String Quartet Composition Competition. The aim of the competition is to foster composition for string quartets by encouraging younger composers to write original works.


    -The competition is open to composers of any nationality or origin born after 1st January 1985.

    -Works must be original and written for a string quartet.

    -The deadline for entering scores expires on 30th August 2021.

    -There is a single prize of 3,000€ net plus diploma.

    -The winning score will be premiered by Quartteto Maurice in the contemporary music series at the 81st Donostia-San Sebastián Musical Fortnight and subsequently included in the 13th “Musikagileak” Contemporary Music Circuit.

  • Obras obligatorias

    1.GENERAL CONDITIONS

    - The competition is open to composers of any nationality or origin born after 1st January

    1985.

    - They can enter as many works as they like, providing these works meet the requirements stipulated by these rules.

     

    2.CONDITIONS FOR PIECES

    - Works must be original and written for a string quartet.

    - Works which have been published or won awards previously will not be accepted.

    - The works submitted may be commissions, but under no circumstances must they have

    been premiered in public or on mechanical or digital media.

    - The aesthetics and composing techniques of the works are free.

    - The composition must not last more than twenty minutes.

     

    3.FORM OF SUBMISSION

    - The deadline for entering scores expires on 30th August 2021.

    - Works may be submitted in manuscript or printed form. In all cases, they must be clearly

    readable, with no crossings-out and on numbered pages. The winning composer must hand over a digitally printed (not manuscript) version of the whole score and of the separate parts, on paper and/or digital media, within 30 days of publication of the jury's decision.

    - The score should only show the title of the piece. No personal identification or signature

    is allowed.

    - Participants must send an e-mail to the address sorozabalcontest@musikagileak.com with the following details:

    a) A copy of the work in PDF format (or download link; the author of the work must make sure they give the necessary authorisations for downloading). In the case of scores in manuscript form, the digital file will be a scan of the manuscript with sufficient image contrast.

    b) Title of the piece

    c) Full name

    d) Postal address

    e) Contact telephone number and email address

    f) Brief biography

    g) Photocopy of an official document accrediting the date of birth

    h) Formal written declaration signed by the author stating that the work submitted is original and has not been published or premiered in public or by mechanical or digital means.

     

    4.JURY

    - The jury will be made up of three composers and/or conductors of recognised standing.

    - The jury's decisions are final.

     

    5.PRICE

    - There is a single prize of 3,000€ net plus an accreditive diploma. Payment is subject to current tax legislation.

    - The jury may highlight further works for whatever reasons it sees fit, which will receive no prize money but the corresponding diploma.

    - The winning score will be premiered by Quartetto Maurice in the contemporary music series at the 83rd Donostia-San Sebastián Musical Fortnight and subsequently included in the 13th “Musikagileak” Contemporary Music Circuit.

     

    6.LEGAL INFORMATION

    - Entering this competition implies full agreement with these rules.

    - The following text must be mentioned in concerts, recordings, publication and reproduction of all kinds of the winning piece: “Winner of the 16th "Pablo Sorozabal" International String Quartet Composition Competition”

    - Performance of the winning work will not incur costs for hiring or purchase of materials for the bodiesorganising the competition.

    - The organisers reserve the right to record the performances of the winning work at the concerts put on by the competition organisers, for their records.

    - Scores submitted which do not win will be destroyed to protect the anonymity of the competition.
