    The Gustav Mahler Academy offers an artistic experience that is unique in its excellence and diversity. Perfect your instrumental skills and gain invaluable experience by playing in ensembles of all genres. Develop an international network of peers and leading personalities in the international music scene. Spend unforgettable summer weeks in Bolzano and in the picturesque mountain village of Toblach, where Mahler once composed.

    To offer a deeper and more sustainable learning experience, starting this year the Gustav Mahler Academy is organized as a biennial program. In case of a successful audition, you will be admitted to both summer academies 2023 and 2024. Your participation in both academies will be mandatory.

    Applications are open to particularly qualified musicians born between January 1, 1997 and July 25, 2005. Musicians of all nationalities are invited to apply.

    Gustav Mahler Academy I > July 25 – August 11, 2023

    Guest Faculty 2023:

    > Gregory Ahss (Violin, Concertmaster of Lucerne Festival Orchestra and Camerata Salzburg)

    > Kerson Leong (Violin, Soloist)

    > Veronika Hagen (Viola, Hagen Quartett)

    > Alban Gerhardt (Cello, Soloist)

    > Rick Stotijn (Double bass, principal double bass Lucerne Festival Orchestra)

    > Olivier Patey (Clarinet, principal clarinet Concertgebouw Orkest Amsterdam)

    Guided by specialists from Klangforum Wien, you will be part of the world premiere of 11.000 Saiten for 50 pianos and ensemble by Georg Friedrich Haas, thus gaining experience in the performance of contemporary music at the highest level.

    Together with musicians from the Mahler Chamber Orchestra you will perform chamber music as well as in an MCO-size chamber orchestra under the direction of composer/conductor Matthias Pintscher. On the programs will be music by Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, Poulenc, Roussel and others.

    Gustav Mahler Academy II > August 25 – September 15, 2024

    On the instruments of the Vienna Philharmonic from 1900, which are made available to you by the Euregio Kulturzentrum Toblach Foundation, you will acquire profound knowledge in performance practice of late romantic music. No prior experience of original instruments is required.

    Guided by luminaries like Clive Brown, you will discover chamber music from Brahms to Mahler and Schönberg on original instruments and perform in beautiful locations in South Tyrol. Side by side with 50 musicians from top European ensembles, you will work with star pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and conductor Philipp von Steinaecker on Rachmaninoff’s 3rd piano concerto and Mahler’s 5th symphony in a full-size symphony orchestra on original instruments.

    After concerts in Toblach and Bolzano the orchestra will tour to Paris, Cologne and other European cities to perform this music for the first time since 1910 on the instruments it was written for.
